Question 1

How long do LED landscape lighting fixtures last, and what does maintenance look like?

Accepted Answer

LED fixtures have significantly longer lifespans than older incandescent or halogen landscape lights, which means routine bulb replacement is rarely a concern. Waukesha County's municipal code already requires **all outdoor fixtures to be LED luminaires**, so every fixture McGuire installs meets that standard from the start. Ongoing maintenance typically involves periodic cleaning of lens covers and occasional transformer checks.

Question 2

Can lighting be added to an existing McGuire project?

Accepted Answer

It can, but the process is more involved than when lighting is planned from the start. Adding lighting to a finished hardscape means routing wire around or under completed surfaces rather than through conduit placed during grading. **Conduit sleeves placed during original construction** make future additions straightforward; without them, the scope of a retrofit depends on what's accessible without disturbing the base. Question 3

Do landscape lighting installations require a permit in Waukesha County?

Accepted Answer

Low-voltage landscape lighting systems generally do not require a permit, but **line-voltage outdoor circuits** connected to your home's electrical panel do. McGuire coordinates with the appropriate trades to ensure any line-voltage work is permitted and inspected as required. Waukesha County's requirements for burial depth and fixture ratings are factored into the system design from the start.

Question 4

Can the lighting system be controlled with a timer or smart controls?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Modern low-voltage transformers support **programmable timers and, in many cases, smart control integration** that allows zone-by-zone scheduling from a phone app. Schedules can be adjusted seasonally to account for Wisconsin's significant daylight variation between summer and winter. This is configured during the final walkthrough so the homeowner leaves with a system that's already set up for their schedule.

Question 5

How does Waukesha County's freeze-thaw climate affect landscape lighting fixtures?

Accepted Answer

Fixtures specified for Wisconsin conditions carry **IP65 ratings or higher**, meaning they're sealed against water ingress and dust, which matters in a climate that moves from subzero winters to humid summers. Recessed paver lights and step lights are also set flush with the hardscape surface, so they move with the paver system through freeze-thaw cycles rather than sitting proud of it and catching ice or foot traffic. Proper base preparation under the hardscape, which McGuire handles as part of the full project, is what keeps the surface stable enough for flush-mounted fixtures to remain level over time.
