Case Study: A Multi-Level Entertainment Oasis in Allenton

When Tim and Jackie moved into their new home in Allenton, they knew the property had incredible potential. However, the existing outdoor space lacked the flow and functionality needed for the large-scale entertaining they envisioned.
After being referred to McGuire Landscape Company by a previous client, they sat down with our lead designer, Andy, to create a vision. The goal was to bridge the gap between their garage, basement, and driveway while creating a stunning space for grilling and fireside relaxation.
Mastering the Slope with Multi-Level Design
The Allenton property presented a common challenge in southeastern Wisconsin: significant elevation changes. To create a functional entertaining space, we couldn't just lay a flat slab of stone; we had to terrace the land.
Our team utilized Thermal Beaver Creek steps (also known as land and stone) to create wide, five-foot transitions between levels. These steps provide a sense of grandeur and safety, ensuring that guests can move comfortably from the driveway to the main patio.
Key Connectivity Features:
-
Driveway to Garage: A custom paver walkway that seamlessly integrates with the service door.
-
Upper to Lower Access: A secondary set of steps connecting the main patio to the finished basement and the existing concrete under the deck.
-
Flow and Function: The design ensures that whether guests arrive from the front of the house or the lower level, they are naturally guided to the heart of the outdoor living space.
Natural Stone Outcroppings and Hardscaping
To support the new patio and create a sense of permanence, we installed massive land and stone outcropping walls. These natural stone features serve as functional retaining elements while adding a rugged, high-end aesthetic to the backyard.
The main patio area was designed with "zones" in mind. One area is dedicated to high-capacity grilling and dining, while another provides a cozy nook for a fire feature, perfect for those cool Wisconsin evenings.
"The use of natural outcropping stone allows us to terrace a property in a way that feels like it was always part of the local landscape, rather than an artificial addition."
The Importance of Invisible Infrastructure: Drainage
While the stone and pavers are the stars of the show, the most critical part of this project is something you can barely see. During the design phase, Andy identified a major risk: water runoff from the road and driveway.
We engineered a sophisticated water collection system to intercept heavy runoff. This system catches water at the driveway's edge, funnels it into underground piping, and discharges it safely at the far end of the yard, away from the new construction.
The timing couldn't have been more perfect. Immediately after we finished seeding and strawed the surrounding lawn, a torrential downpour hit Allenton. Thanks to our proactive drainage work, the site remained perfectly intact, preventing what would have been a total washout of the new landscape.
Atmosphere and Longevity: Lighting and Sealing
A high-end landscape should be just as beautiful at 9:00 PM as it is at noon. For Tim and Jackie, we installed a comprehensive low-voltage lighting package that offers both safety and ambiance.
Lighting Highlights:
-
Color-Changing Path Lights: These allow the homeowners to change the mood of the patio for holidays or special events via a smartphone app.
-
Strategic Up-Lighting: We placed lights at the base of key plantings and architectural features to create depth and drama after dark.
-
Step Lighting: Integrated lights on the Beaver Creek steps ensure safe passage between the different patio levels.
To put the finishing touches on the project, our team returned to professionally clean and seal the pavers. This process is vital for two reasons: it brings out the vibrant, hidden colors of the stone and provides a protective barrier against wear, tear, and the harsh Wisconsin elements.
