The primary challenge of the Kaul property was navigating the significant grade changes between the front entrance and the lower backyard. To create a seamless flow, we utilized Landon stone outcropping to establish a series of structural tiers.

Unlike standard retaining walls, Landon stone offers a timeless, weathered aesthetic that feels as though it has been part of the Wisconsin landscape for decades. These outcroppings provide the necessary support for the hillside while doubling as natural architectural elements.

To connect these levels, we installed Landon stone steps. We chose natural, snapped edges for these steps to provide a clean, uniform look that still retains the authentic texture of real stone.

Movement through a landscape should feel like an experience, not just a walk. For the Jameson family, we designed a traffic flow that guides guests from the front door down into the heart of the backyard.

Strategic Paver Landings

To prevent the descent from feeling too steep or monotonous, we integrated custom paver landings between the stone stair flights. These landings serve several purposes:

The Golfer’s Sanctuary: A Custom Putting Green

The centerpiece of the lower tier is a professional-grade synthetic putting green. For a homeowner with a passion for golf, this addition turned a standard lawn into a high-utility recreation zone.

The green was designed specifically for both putting practice and short chips from the surrounding stone tiers. By surrounding the green with Landon stone walls and manicured plantings, we created a "stadium feel" that makes every practice session feel special.

Beyond the utility for golf, the putting green provides a lush, evergreen aesthetic that stays perfectly manicured year-round with zero maintenance. It offers a clean, vibrant contrast to the earthy tones of the stone outcroppings.

For this project, we integrated a Brio smokeless insert into the stone masonry. This stainless steel technology allows the Jameson family to enjoy the crackle and heat of a real wood fire without the inconvenience of shifting winds and stinging smoke.

We strategically placed path lights along the Landon stone steps and paver landings. This ensures that the transition from the front door to the backyard is safe for guests at any hour.

Architectural Up-Lighting

To highlight the texture of the stone outcroppings and the surrounding canopy, we utilized directional up-lights. These fixtures cast soft shadows and emphasize the verticality of the tiered design, creating a dramatic visual effect from the home’s interior windows.

To soften the hardscapes, we curated a selection of plantings designed to thrive in our local climate. These were installed within the tiers created by the Landon stone walls.
