Lakefront Mastery: The Kurey Boathouse & Shoreline Project

When it comes to lakefront living in southeastern Wisconsin, the beauty of the water often comes with significant logistical challenges. At McGuire Landscape Company, we thrive on these complexities, specializing in properties where standard solutions simply won’t cut it.
The Kurey project represents a multi-phase journey that began with a chance encounter at a nearby job site and evolved into one of our most comprehensive shoreline transformations to date. This project highlights our ability to combine heavy-duty marine engineering with high-end aesthetic finishes.
Overcoming Extreme Site Access Challenges
One of the most defining characteristics of the Kurey project was the difficulty of the terrain. With steep grades and limited land-based entry points, we knew traditional delivery methods would be impossible for the lower half of the property.
To solve this, we utilized specialized barge transportation to move equipment and materials across the lake. This allowed us to maintain progress without damaging the existing upper-level landscape we had completed in earlier phases.
Marine Logistics and Heavy Equipment
-
Barge Operations: We drove dump trucks full of gravel and boulder material directly onto barges at a local boat launch.
-
Machinery Transport: Skid steers and excavators were ferried to the shoreline to handle the heavy lifting required for the boathouse area.
-
Material Management: By bringing materials in by water, we significantly reduced the impact on the property’s lawn and driveway.
Shoreline Stabilization and 150 Feet of Frontage
While a typical lake lot in Washington or Waukesha County might feature 50 feet of frontage, the Kurey property boasts an impressive 150 feet of shoreline. Managing a stretch of land this size requires a deep understanding of erosion control and DNR regulations.
We built a new, robust shoreline using a combination of boulder walls and rip-rap to protect the property from wave action and ice heaving. This wasn't just about protection; it was about creating a functional space for the family to enjoy.
Creating Functional Waterfront Spaces
Beyond the structural walls, we focused on making the lakefront usable. We created a large, flat lawn area near the water, providing the perfect spot for summer games and lakeside relaxation.
We also engineered a custom pier platform. This stone landing is set at a specific height to match the pier every year, ensuring the transition from land to water is seamless and the installation process is simplified for the homeowner.
Precision Stonework: Thermal Bluestone and Landen Stone
To connect the house to the boathouse and the pier, we implemented a series of high-end masonry features. We replaced the existing, outdated concrete steps with natural Landen Stone steps that wind through the property.
For the primary walkways, we selected Thermal Bluestone. Unlike standard pavers, thermal bluestone offers a natural, sophisticated texture with a consistent thickness that provides a safe and level walking surface even on a sloped site.
Strategic Construction Sequencing
On a steep lakefront site, the order of operations is everything. Our team had to work from the bottom up as far as possible, then transition to working from the top down.
This careful planning ensured we didn't "choke ourselves off" or trap equipment in areas that were about to be finished. Every stone was placed with the next three steps of the project in mind.
Innovative Drainage and Environmental Solutions
Protecting the lake's water quality is a top priority for McGuire. For the Kurey residence, we installed a sophisticated Infiltrator System to manage stormwater runoff from the roof and hardscapes.
This system pipes water from downspouts into an underground collection area filled with specialized gravel. This allows the water to slowly percolate back into the ground naturally rather than rushing into the lake and causing erosion.
Sustainable Turf Options
-
Mowable Turf: High-traffic areas near the water were finished with premium sod for a traditional lawn feel.
-
Fine Fescue No-Mow Sod: For the steeper banks and less accessible areas, we sourced a specific No-Mow sod from Coloma, Wisconsin.
-
Erosion Control: We maintained strict temporary erosion solutions throughout the build to meet and exceed County and DNR requirements.
The Finishing Touches: Lighting and Power
A luxury outdoor space should be just as functional at 9:00 PM as it is at noon. We integrated a comprehensive night lighting system throughout the property, featuring color-changing technology that allows the Kureys to set the mood for any occasion.
We also ran dedicated electrical conduit down to the lakefront. This provides the boathouse and pier area with reliable power for boat lifts, music, and additional accent lighting, making the waterfront a true extension of the home.
"We like cool projects that aren't easy to do. When access is tough and the site is challenging, that is where our team really shines."
