Natural Stone & Modern Luxury: A Custom Lake Country Retreat

When building a new custom home in Southeastern Wisconsin, the transition from the indoor living space to the natural surroundings is often the most critical design element. For our clients, Christy and Jeremy Peterson, the goal was to complement their stunning new architecture with a landscape that felt both grand and grounded.
By blending structural integrity with aesthetic elegance, we transformed their backyard into a multi-functional retreat. This project highlights the seamless integration of natural stone, expert masonry, and advanced outdoor lighting technology.
Establishing a Grand Entrance with Thermal Bluestone
One of the standout features of the Peterson project is the primary access point leading from the home to the lower patio level. We opted for five-foot-wide Thermal Beaver Creek steps to create a sense of scale and luxury.
Choosing a five-foot width rather than the standard three or four feet ensures the transition feels "grand." It allows two people to walk side-by-side comfortably and provides an inviting visual flow that matches the proportions of a high-end custom build.
Why Thermal Finishes Matter
-
Safety: The thermal process creates a consistent, non-slip texture that is vital for Wisconsin winters.
-
Aesthetics: It provides a clean, modern look while maintaining the natural color variations of the stone.
-
Durability: These heavy-duty steps are built to withstand the freeze-thaw cycles common in Washington and Waukesha counties.
The Art of the Man-In-Stone Outcropping Wall
To manage the elevation changes of the property and create a level foundation for the new patio, we utilized Man-In-Stone outcropping walls. These massive natural stones provide structural retention while mimicking the look of a natural rock shelf.
The wall wraps meticulously around the backside of the property, creating a defined border between the manicured living space and the lush, wooded lot beyond. This "naturalistic" approach ensures the hardscape doesn't feel out of place in its environment.
Behind these walls, we utilized a significant amount of high-quality gravel backfill. Proper drainage is the secret to a long-lasting retaining wall, ensuring that hydrostatic pressure doesn't shift the stones over time.
Expanding the Covered Patio Experience
The Petersons already had a beautiful covered porch featuring a magnificent stone fireplace. Our task was to extend that usable square footage by building a custom paver patio that flows naturally from the existing structure.
By adding additional steps coming off the covered porch, we created a tiered living experience. This allows for different "zones" of activity—one for dining under the roof and another for lounging in the open air.
"The goal was to give them usable space that felt like a natural extension of the home's interior, rather than an afterthought."
Interactive Lighting and Evening Ambiance
A high-end landscape is only as good as its visibility after the sun goes down. For this project, we installed a sophisticated color-changing lighting system that gives the homeowners total control over their evening atmosphere.
The Benefits of Smart Landscape Lighting
-
Path Safety: Strategic path lights illuminate the flagstone steppers leading from the front of the house to the back.
-
Architectural Accent: Uplighting on the stone outcroppings highlights the texture and depth of the rock.
-
Versatility: The color-changing capability allows the Petersons to set the mood for holidays, parties, or a quiet night by the fire.
The Standalone Fire Pit and Flagstone Pathways
While the covered porch features a built-in fireplace, there is something irreplaceable about a standalone fire pit under the stars. We added a dedicated fire feature area that serves as the ultimate destination for late-night conversations.
To connect the various areas of the property, we installed natural flagstone steppers. These lead from the front of the home to the backyard, providing a clear walking path that doesn't disrupt the organic feel of the lawn and wooded areas.
The result is a landscape that feels established and mature, despite being a brand-new build. It respects the wooded surroundings of the lot while providing the modern amenities required for luxury outdoor living.
