Stunning Outdoor Kitchen and Deck Renovation in Wisconsin

Stunning Outdoor Kitchen and Deck Renovation in Wisconsin

When we first visited the Reinke property, the existing outdoor space was struggling to keep up with the homeowners' vision. An aging patio area, overgrown and showing signs of wear, occupied a prime location that lacked both functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Our team at McGuire Landscape Company, led by our designer Andy, collaborated closely with the Reinkes to reimagine the entire footprint of their backyard. The goal was to create a seamless transition between the home’s architecture and the natural landscape of southeastern Wisconsin.

A Reimagined Deck and Seamless Transitions

The first step in this comprehensive renovation was addressing the home's vertical transitions. We didn't just repair the old deck; we completely redesigned the layout to improve the flow of movement into the new living space.

By adding a new section of steps in a strategic location, we created a direct path into the heart of the outdoor kitchen. One of the most unique structural elements of this project involved integrating the deck support posts directly into the masonry of the outdoor kitchen island.

    Expanding the Footprint

    • Extended Decking: We added a new section of decking that pushes further into the yard, providing elevated views of the property.

    • Structural Integration: Post supports were expertly wrapped and integrated into the kitchen stonework for a cohesive, built-in look.

    • Improved Circulation: The new stair placement ensures that guests can move easily from the indoor kitchen to the outdoor grilling station.

    The Ultimate Outdoor Chef’s Kitchen

At the center of this renovation is a high-performance outdoor kitchen designed for the serious griller. This isn't just a place to flip burgers; it is a fully equipped culinary station that rivals many indoor setups.

The kitchen features a premium grill equipped with a dedicated sear burner for restaurant-quality steaks and a rotisserie cooker for slow-roasting. We also custom-built a specific station to house a Sapphire smoker, ensuring every cooking method is represented.

    Premium Features and Finishes

To ensure longevity in our Wisconsin climate, we installed an outdoor-rated refrigerator designed to stay outside year-round without the risk of freezing or electrical damage. The countertops are the true showstopper, featuring intricate masonry work and a custom inlay.

We applied a high-grade sealant to the countertops to achieve a "wet look" that enhances the natural colors of the stone. This sealant serves a dual purpose: it provides a beautiful, deep finish while protecting the stone from water penetration and seasonal weather damage.

    Hardscaping with Artistry and Purpose

Covering nearly 2,000 square feet, the paver installation required a sophisticated design to prevent the space from feeling overwhelming. We achieved this by breaking the area into distinct "rooms" using color and texture variations.

A triple-border technique was used to define the edges of each section, creating a visual rhythm that guides the eye through the space. This approach allows the large patio to feel intimate and organized rather than just a vast expanse of stone.

    Masonry and Vertical Elements

    • Seat Walls: Built using the Azer Tandem system, these walls provide ample overflow seating for large gatherings.

    • Pillars: Stately pillars anchor the corners of the patio, adding a sense of permanence and architectural weight.

    • Under-Cap Lighting: We integrated low-voltage LED lighting beneath the wall caps to provide safety and a warm ambiance after the sun sets.

The Warmth of a Smokeless Fire Feature

No high-end Wisconsin landscape is complete without a dedicated space for cool evenings. We constructed a permanent, built-in fire pit that matches the aesthetic of the seat walls and kitchen island.

Inside the masonry shell, we installed a stainless steel Breeo insert. This technology creates a secondary combustion that significantly reduces smoke, allowing the Reinkes to enjoy a wood-burning fire without the typical irritation to the eyes or the smell of smoke on their clothes.

"The combination of the Breeo insert and the custom Azer Tandem stonework creates a fire feature that is as clean and efficient as it is beautiful."

    Preserving Beauty Through Quality Construction

In Washington and Waukesha counties, the freeze-thaw cycle can be brutal on masonry work. That is why we prioritize structural integrity in every layer of our builds, from the deep-set footings to the final coat of sealant.

By sealing the countertops and using high-durability pavers, we ensure that the Reinke family will enjoy this space for decades. The project stands as a testament to what is possible when thoughtful design meets expert craftsmanship.

    Why Professional Design Matters

A project of this scale requires more than just a contractor; it requires a vision. By coordinating the deck renovation simultaneously with the patio and kitchen, we avoided the "piecemeal" look that often plagues home improvements.

Every element, from the way the light hits the sealed stone to the flow of traffic from the stairs to the grill, was planned with the homeowners' lifestyle in mind. The result is a backyard transformation that significantly increases the value and enjoyability of the home.
